When I was practice at a nursing home setting, I noticed that the assistant nurses were faced with different types of ethical dilemmas. The problem with these dilemmas was that they were not only linked to the working teams and the staff's own expertise in the profession as a assistant nurse, it was also external influences that had effect and that is something assistant nurses have no opportunity to influence. I began thinking about how assistant nurses see themselves according to their work situation. The aim of this study was to examine whether assistant nurses at nursing home settings was given opportunities to maintain and operate by the national action plan for the elderly, in their daily occupation. Do assistant nurses receive enough support in their professional capacity to meet the elderly with respect and maintenance of autonomy? My questions were: Under what conditions experienced assistant nurses working in nursing home settings, they manage to respond to ethics, power and autonomy in relation to the elderly? What difference does education, guidance and financial resources make to be able to meet the elderly´s individual requirements and expectations on a daily basis? The study was based on interviews with five assistant nurses representing four different nursing home settings located in two different municipalities in the south of Sweden. Five different topics were discussed. These were: personal questions, work/colleagues, ethics and power, implement and management. To analyze these themes I used the ethics and the power theory. The study shows that there are differences in how assistant nurses are given the opportunity to guidance. The study also shows how assistant nurses deal with ethics and power and what they do when ethical dilemmas arise.
