Title: The chameleon in the hospitals - a study based on hospital welfare officers experiences and strategies.

The purpose of this paper is to investigate how hospital welfare officers experience their role and the strategies applied to establish themselves. With the aim of answering these questions, six hospital welfare officers have been interviewed by me. The material gathered has been analyzed by using Bourdieu´s concepts; field, habitus, symbolic capital and strategies.

The conclusion of my study is based on what hospital welfare officers often experience in regard to the nursing staff that have no previous knowledge of what this particular group of professionals do. They are also not considered to be full-fledged members of the nursing staff. In order to strengthen their role, hospital welfare officers develop strategies such as being flexible and adapting to the situation at hand.

Other strategies which the hospital welfare officers have developed is get an education in psychotherapy and to wear the traditional doctor´s white coat. However, these strategies have not been triumphant. This is explained by the fact that the rest of the nursing staff has different idea of what a symbolic capital is. The “right” symbolic capital for the rest of the staff is a state licensing. In regards to the welfare officers, the lack of medical education can be a disadvantage resulting in making the demand of state licensing rather difficult.

Key words: hospital welfare officers, Bourdieu, licensing, field, symbolic capital, habitus, strategies. (Less)
