Abstract
Located in the southern most part of Sweden, approximately five kilometres from Lund, is a small village called Uppåkra. However, for 1000 years during the Scandinavian Iron Age this was one of the largest settlements in Scandinavia. It is believed to have been a place of special significance, a religious and political centre as well as an important place for trading goods.
Since the mid 1990’s, archaeological investigations and other surveys have been a reoccurring feature in Uppåkra. The local and regional authorities are now planning to build a new heritage centre here, where visitors will be able to see or even participate in the fieldwork and where finds will be stored and exhibited.
The plans are still a work in progress, but it is hoped that the project will be finished by the year 2014. Apart from the authorities, the project also requires involvement and cooperation from landowners, from different parts of Lund University and preferably also from the Swedish government.
The plans and the project’s many stakeholders are the main focus for this thesis. The aim is to discuss how the different stakeholders use history and cultural heritage to plan for the future in Uppåkra. The analysis has shown that several of them believe that building an archaeological centre in Uppåkra will strengthen the identity of the local population. Also, the municipality of Staffanstorp, where Uppåkra is situated, want to use the development of Uppåkra to improve the municipality’s image within the region.
The stakeholders also have a lot of faith in the archaeological fieldwork’s ability to attract tourism. With the exception of two small grave mounds, next to nothing of Uppåkra’s Iron Age is visible above ground. The archaeological surveys will be the main attraction on offer in Uppåkra. (Less)
