Abstract
This master thesis is made in cooperation with Assa Abloy ES in Landskrona, Sweden. The purpose was to investigate the arm system for automatic swing door operators and set up an optimized theoretical model for a new PULL arm system with increased closing torque. The reason why the firm wants to get a more detailed view of the arm system is because of the present prevailing issue with non closing door opener systems. That often occurs when the automatic door opener system is operating in increased pressure different environments. The main goal for the new arm system is to gain the mechanical interchange and improve the design without increasing the manufacturing cost.

Further on in the product development a number of prototype arm system will be manufactured from the theoretical model and validated in the testing device according to the standard EN1154 for automatic door openers, to insure the firm that the product later on is satisfying the customer demands.
The method that has been used in this master thesis is partially based on the product development method described by Ulrich & Eppinger. This begins with an extensive information search and literature study to enable a complete benchmarking analysis. This part is later followed by the product development process and a final evaluation, resulting in one or more approved alternatives for a new arm system. These alternatives are later on prepared for prototype manufacturing in accordance with custom made drawings to insure that the practical verifying is delivered on time.
Three products in total have been developed within this master thesis. I believe that all of them have a better working cycle and potential than prior product line of arm system. All of them have therefore been recommended to Assa Abloy ES for further development.
The first arm system is a shorter linkage arm in the same model as PULL and is already used in Assa Abloy ES line of production but for a different purpose. The second is a smart compact arm system with great potential in design and interchange with a similar estimated manufacturing cost as ST-V/H. The third and last is a modified ST-V/H arm system with increased interchange. All three arm system has shown that much improvement can be done in the area of arm system. If any of these solutions are attractive to the market depends on many different factors that the firm has to investigate further to successfully develop and manufacture a new arm system. This also means that all other arm system solutions should be kept as inspiration, because they might be used as a platform at some point in future development. (Less)
