Light weighted packages have become an alternative to carton packages which have been widely used for decades around the world. The largest markets are Asia and Eastern Europe. The process of filling the light weighted packages presently results in an unbroken waste strip which is stored in a container. Continuous flow from a waste strip requires large storage volume. The container must therefore be emptied manually every hour by an operator to prevent breakdown. The main goal is to develop and manufacture a prototype with the capacity to dispose the strip for a full production cycle of 21 hours without any needs of external operation.
Gathering information internally and externally about the present situation was required to identify product specifications and was of advantage when a number of concepts were created and evaluated in a concept selection. The selected concepts were then further investigated until a final concept was chosen. The technology was based on a cutting principle and a prototype was developed. A new container was also designed to utilize all of the available storage volume.
An extensive test of the prototype showed that the cutting principle was working well. Although there were some problems with the electric motor, the tests could be performed with a cordless drill. The prototype cut the unbroken waste strip into small pieces, but static electricity caused problems in the container.
The tests showed that the prototype can be used in the filling machine, but some small modifications are needed before commercial use. (Less)
