- Taiwanese bridal photography is a unique practice with the goal to produce images of fantasy styles ahead of the wedding. Chosen images are displayed at the wedding banquet for the guests to admire and later used as decoration in the house of newlyweds. This visual phenomenon is interesting in that people actively take part in the creation and consumption of visual commodity and it is connected to marriage, a rite of passage. From the cultural perspective, this bridal photography, dominated by the photo studios, even reversed the passive role of recording to actively changing the wedding culture in Taiwan. - Taiwanese bridal photography is a unique practice with the goal to produce images of fantasy styles ahead of the wedding. Chosen images are displayed at the wedding banquet for the guests to admire and later used as decoration in the house of newlyweds. This visual phenomenon is interesting in that people actively take part in the creation and consumption of visual commodity and it is connected to marriage, a rite of passage. From the cultural perspective, this bridal photography, dominated by the photo studios, even reversed the passive role of recording to actively changing the wedding culture in Taiwan. By combining services like wedding planning and honeymoon travel package, wedding industry is a combination of artistic work and profitable business.
This thesis takes a deeper look into bridal images created in the 21st century and attempts to analyze the meaning by applying semiotic analysis to specific images. Aesthetically and practically this kind of image is very different from the documentary tradition of wedding photography. Starting with an introduction of the traditional approach, this analysis takes into consideration the styles of the images and tries to find out the relation between signifiers in the images and the signified fantasy, and attempts to interpret the visuality in such bridal photography.
Another aspect of the discussion concerns the ways in which people look and perceive these images, as meanings are interpreted by people when they look at the images, also considered in this thesis is the change brought by digitization of image and distribution over the Internet. (Less)
