Abstract
My intention with this essay is to analyze documents from the Untied Nations to provide a deeper understanding of the debates that are taking place today concerning climate change and its security dimensions.
There are two different security perspectives that can be applied on the climate change debates. The first one is called the national security perspective and has its roots in realism. The other perspective is called human security and raises critic against the national security notion to broaden the concept of security. This will not lead to any constructive solutions because the object being referred to is still the state and not the human being.
I found that there is no consensus in the General Assembly or in the Security Council when it comes to the link between security and climate change. Member-states are mostly arguing over the question of conflict as a consequence of climate change. The Secretary General and UNEP have taken a view that is heavily influenced by the national security perspective although some aspects of human security can be traced. (Less)
