Abstract
Preimplantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) is a relatively new technique which allows for
parents to choose an embryo for implantation based on genetic information obtained
from different embryos. The technique has potenatial beneficial effects such as the
elimination and treatment of genetic disorders, but is also highly controversial due to its
ethical and moral aspects, and the possible future scenarios of its uses. Critics argue that
basic human values are threatened through the implementation of PGD, while the
possible benefits motivate further research and use of the technique.
This paper analyses the Swedish political debate about PGD in roughly the past ten
years. The arguments for and against PGD are identified and analysed... (More)
