It can be concluded that the new cult was significant for the status of the city of Ephesos in relation to the other cities of the province. The building of the temple and other related structures also meant big changes in the apperence of the city. The architectural and sculptural elements in turn was effective ways of consolidating the elevated position of the emperor in the minds of the general public. Both individuals and associations saw the need to position themselves in relation to the new cult. Examples of this can be seen in the distribution of priesthoods and the inclusion of the emperor in the religious rituals of certain associations. The inauguration of the cult of the flavian emperors undoubtedly brought an intensification of imperial cult to the city of Ephesos in terms of sacrifices, processions, festivals and games in honour of the emperor. In relation to this new cult Ephesos was also the first city to be called neokoros of an imperial cult. After the establishment of the cult in Ephesos this terminology spread quickly throughout the whole of Asia Minor. The city of Ephesos itself actually became neokoros of additional imperial cults in the following years. The cult of the flavian emperors survived the death of Domitan and was continued in the honour of Titus and Vespasian. (Less)
