Abstract (Swedish)
Genetic plant diversity is crucial to meet future challenges through plant adaptation to new biotic and abiotic conditions. To date, conservation strategy focuses on an ex situ (off-site) approach whereas the importance of in situ (in-site) conservation has been stressed to increase the public engagement and facilitate the gradual evolutionary adaptation of the material. This essay focuses on the construction of conservation among landraces of agricultural crops in Sweden. The four cereals wheat, rye, barley and oats are an important part of the agricultural production in Sweden and have a long history in the country. New regulation concerning marketing of seed from landraces and varieties went into force in the autumn of 2009. However,... (More)

However, law and regulations are still a major obstacle for the spreading of heterogeneous landraces. Furthermore, non-registered varieties are seen as an opportunity to cut yourself off from the influence of agrobusiness and seed companies which affects the communication between growers and policy makers. The construction of conservation is built up by regulating, scientific and poetic discourses. The main finding is that even if engagement exists among operators in the field, differences in constructions of visions, opinions and sense of duty complicates and impedes the increase of genetic diversity in field.
