- Abstract
- The notion of Climate debt (or Carbon debt) has been used for more than a decade, but it was only during 2009 that it got a lot of attention through a NGO campaign and through interventions in the UNFCCC by Bolivian delegates. Climate debt is defined by Boliva as over-consumption of the available capacity of the Earth’s atmosphere and climate system, and it calls for the developed countries to repay it's debt to the climate creditors, i.e. developing countries. In this thesis, the notion of climate debt is – maybe for the first time – fixed in a framework of social theory and international Realpolitik.

The main object of the thesis is, however, to identify an quantitative method as adequate as possible for calculating climate debt, and to use that method to calculate Sweden's climate debt. In order to do so, four existing quantitative methods for calculating climate debt are described and applied to Swedish data. Two of the methods are developed by UN bodies, two by NGO networks. To be able to compare these methods a common ground has to be established which requires a number of assessments and assumptions regarding different climate related scientific fields.
Finally a modified method, called Simms-Wess-Warlenius, is constructed and programmed with available data. According to this, Sweden's climate debt is 3,6 GtCO2. (Less)
