- Abstract
- There are today about 200 000 children living in families where either one or both parents are addicted to alcohol. These children often become young carers, as they are prematurely being placed in adult caring roles. The aim of this thesis has been to illustrate the situation for children of alcoholics and to examine how these children are coping when parents do not fulfil their parenting responsibilites as well as to focus on how social work can be implemented to support these children.
A qualitative study has been carried out by analysing autobiographies written by children in disfuntional families with addiction problems and by interviewing professionals working with children and their families. Focus lied on the children’s own experiences and feelings of the situation along with the professionals’ opinion in that matter.
By analyzing our material we found that children of alcoholics are taking on responsibilities, both by choice and more or less by force, not always suitable for their age. Considering the parent’s lack of engagement the children find themselves in roles such as taking care of their siblings and making sure they get to school on time as well as taking care of the bills and cleaning the house. Children of alcoholics often become the parents of their own parents and have to make sure everything is in order to make the best of the situation; they become young carers who are primay caregivers in their families due to parental illness, addiction or disability.
To cope with their situation and seaking explanations on their parent’s behaviour the children develop different strategies such as self-blame, denial and humor. However, despite the complicated and demanding situation, most of these children are remarkable survivors, who have an ability to monitor exactly what is going on and therefore develop a capability to adjust to the situation and their parent’s illness.
