- “I’m different all the time” – A qualitative study of young people’s roles and collective identity formation in different parts of Gothenburg
The purpose of this study was to compare young people’s view of their neighborhoods, and what significance the residential area has for their collective identity formation. Young people living in a residential area with a low proportion of native Swedes, low medium income and a high unemployment rate were compared with youths in an inner city district, where a great majority are native Swedes and the average income is high. The study was conducted using a total of four focus group interviews, and four individual interviews. In order to analyze my material, I took help of previous research in this... In order to analyze my material, I took help of previous research in this subject, Erving Goffman’s social psycho-logical theory of roles and teams, Wacquant’s territorial stigmatization and Ferraiuolo’s and others’ discussion of liquid identity (“code-switching”). I found that young people take different roles at different times, according to the team they currently are in. The study also shows that there is a stronger affinity for the neighbourhood in the suburbs than in the inner city and that young people living in the inner city are included in more teams than those who live in the suburbs. This is suggested to depend on the geographical location of districts and a high degree of territorial stigmatization of the suburbs, which is strengthened by the media description of young people living there. My results also showed that young people with foreign background feel that they have a liquid identity where they in some respects feel Swedish, in others not.
