- Abstract
- This study aimed to highlight ADHD in adolescents (12-18 years) and the connection to crime on the basis of the professional discourse perspective. I have also chosen to investigate the value of a possible diagnosis, but also the importance of social factors when it comes to development of criminal behaviour among young people. The interviews have been semi structured and the interviews that have been done are from child and adolescent psychiatry in southern Sweden (BUP), three social workers and two psychologists. In this analysis, I lifted up a model that is based on labeling theory. At the end of my study, I found that adolescents with ADHD have a higher risk to fall into criminal behaviour. Social factors can be a determining factor... (More)

In this analysis, I lifted up a model that is based on labeling theory. At the end of my study, I found that adolescents with ADHD have a higher risk to fall into criminal behaviour. Social factors can be a determining factor for the adolescents to fall into a criminal behaviour. Deficiencies in parenting and inattention and exclusion in schools mentioned but also biological factors. Youth with ADHD tend to seek excitement, and that’s one of the reasons why they cross the line. I also found a difference in the criminal behaviour among boys and girls. Boys are often more violent and girls tend to seek destructive relationships. I found also that the diagnosis of ADHD is a relief for the family and in family relations, but it is also important to diagnose the children in time, to break a negative trend and a destructive behaviour. Double Diagnosis in form of conduct disorder is a common factor for the development of a more serious criminal behaviour. (Less)
