During the year 2009 you were able to read in Swedish newspapers about the increasing use of cannabis in Sweden. This in combination with what I learned at my professional practice during the fall 2009 about the risks and possible consequences of cannabis using got me thinking about if all professionals that come in contact with cannabis users in their line of work feels the same way about this drug and looks at it the same way. But I also started to think about such things as the question whether to legalize cannabis or not, and the different reasons on why to do it. Furthermore, I started to wonder how cannabis can be such a usual illegal drug in Sweden and how it can be as accepted as it is, newspapers may be alarming in their coverage of this problem, but society in general doesn’t seem to be alarmed. What the newspapers also got me wondering about was if media could start some kind of panic in society and if professionals felt like the media do so.
My aim with this thesis was to interview people who comes in contact with cannabis users in their line of work and to get their point of view on cannabis as a problem, legalization of cannabis and the medias affect when it comes to society’s view on cannabis as a problem, and also try to explain why cannabis is considered a social problem by some but not by others.
I have used qualitative methods; I have interviewed six professionals who works with drug related questions, two social workers, two police officers and two persons working within the psychiatry. Furthermore, I have searched for cannabis related information in literature and on different websites that is about cannabis. What I found was that there among my six informants is a general negative attitude towards cannabis and that they often claim that cannabis is a “gateway drug”, leading the users in to deeper substance abuse. It also seems that the society in general does not see cannabis as such a risky drug as professionals do. Furthermore, none of my informants felt like there ever is a case of moral panic when it comes to cannabis or any positive aspects of legalization. (Less)
