The purpose of this study was to analyse how media portray men and women that are addicted to sex. We also wanted to see if there were any obvious differences between men and women in the portrayals. To be able to do this we did a discourse analyse of 60 articles from the daily press and the evening papers in Sweden. To analyse these 60 articles we used a social constructivist perspective, we have also been using Judith Butlers gender theory, discourse, Nils Christies ideal victim theory and Nancy Chodorows theory about attachment.
Our study is based on two main questions, which are:
- How are men and women portrayed as sex-addicts in the daily press and the evening papers?
- What differences are there in the daily press and the evening papers´ portrayal of sexual addicted men and women when it comes to being a victim?
We found that men are more often portrayed as ideal victims compared to women by the press. The reason for this is that the authors describe men as weak and anxiety-ridden in contrast to women who the authors describe as in need of confirmation. (Less)
