The purpose of this study was to examine the children with parents suffering from mental illness and their situation when the search for normality and the avoidance of stigmatisation effectively have consequences on the search for help. The aim was to analyse how much the search for normality and the avoidance of stigmatisation have on the children’s lives. In the investigation, interviews were made with professional social workers in contact with the children of mentally ill parents. The analysis was based on two theory branches of symbolic interactionism, the theory of norms and the search for normality and the theory of labelling and stigmatisation. As a conclusion, the investigation shows the implications of the view of mental illness in society on the children and families living with mental illness, as it is stigmatised in a negative manner. Because of the stigmatization of mental illness, the children do not get in contact with the support they would need, and therefore, the invisibility of the children continue.
Key words: children with parents suffering from mental illness, normality, stigmatisation, labelling. (Less)
