- Abstract
- The aim of the current retrospective study was to investigate the subjective experience of momentum and the presence of momentum in performance. Earlier studies have focused on studying individuals and novices in fictive situations. We decided to study the phenomenon on a team level. A case study was conducted on ten female elite handball players who were asked to carry out a survey where the aim was to find out the team’s understanding of momentum. This understanding was then compared with the team’s real performance based on all the 22 competitive games played during season 2009/2010, excluding the playoff games. The performance was divided into four streak categories based on the characteristics of occurrences during the game. The... (More)

This understanding was then compared with the team’s real performance based on all the 22 competitive games played during season 2009/2010, excluding the playoff games. The performance was divided into four streak categories based on the characteristics of occurrences during the game. The beginning of the streaks was either in defense or offence and was assessed as either positive or negative. A streak signaled the emergence of momentum and when a streak continued the team was said to have momentum. The results revealed convergence between the team’s cohesive perception of positive defense and the team’s real performance. The team experienced positive momentum in their defense and a presence of positive momentum could be identified in the team’s game statistics. (Less)
