Development of a Warmer Holder for a Dialysis Machine

- Abstract
- This work originated from that Gambro had a problem with their intensive care dialysis
machine, Prismaflex™. The blood tube leading from the machine back to the patient
had in some cases creased and stopped the blood flow. Gambro thought that a new or
modified warmer holder would prevent this from happening and wanted me to develop
this holder. The warmer device heats the blood to body temperature after dialysis.
I started to see what criteria Gambro had on a new holder and graded these by
importance. The robustness and chock resistance were important and of course that there
should be no risk of creasing. It was also desirable to have the option to have a patient on
the left side of Prismaflex™.

Then I started to come up with concept suggestions by brainstorming. A selection of the
best suggestions are presented and are graded with pluses and minuses. The concept I
found best and decided to develop further was a holder with two parts, one base
connected to Prismaflex™ and one head connected to the base with a hinge. If a blood
tube is mounted incorrectly the head will turn to avoid creasing.
When I had a concept, I started to develop the holder by seeing how the different
characteristics could be solved and evaluating which was best suited for Gambro’s
demands. At the end I had a holder that met all their criteria.
Drawings were made and sent to production of the prototype. The prototype was tested
and I found that with some small changes this concept will be a good solution for the
problem Gambro had. (Less)
