Abstract
GDP per Capita (PPP USD) and HDI are two important indicators of national development. Both indicators are frequently used for international comparisons. To perform an evaluation of these we have examined their relationship with five major aspects in a society; health, education, equality between the sexes, democracy and segregation. The developments in GDP and HDI are examined over a ten year period with an analysis of variance, a form of regression analysis. The indicators are tested against ten independent variables which reflect different aspects of society. The independent variables are Education Index, Gender Development Index (GDI), Region, Life Expectancy, Public Health Expenditure (PHE), Human Poverty Index (HDI), General Income... (More)

The indicators are tested against ten independent variables which reflect different aspects of society. The independent variables are Education Index, Gender Development Index (GDI), Region, Life Expectancy, Public Health Expenditure (PHE), Human Poverty Index (HDI), General Income Inequality Index (GINI), Political Stability and Absence of Violence (PSAV), Political Rights and Voter Turnout. The Models being examined are: The Development in HDI as a linear function of Education Index, GDI, Region, Life Expectancy, PHE, HPI, GINI, PSAV, Political Rights and Voter Turnout The Development in GDP as a linear function of Education Index, GDI, Region, Life Expectancy, PHE, HPI, GINI, PSAV, Political Rights and Voter Turnout The independent variables can account for almost 90% of the development in the GDP and almost 70% of the development in HDI. The results indicate that the GDP is sensitive to social unrest; it is however unimportant whether a nation is a democracy or a dictatorship. Armed conflicts however inhibit the development in the GDP. The development in HDI is positively affected by equality, health and education. The political situation is irrelevant to HDI development.
