MEMRI is a media institute which explore the Middle East through the region´s media. In this essay I study MEMRI´s reporting about the conflict associated with the cartoons and compare it with the reporting of Svenska dagbladet. The theory I use is framing theory, particularly Robert M. Entmans theory, and Samuel P. Huntingtons theory about the clash of civilizations. Methodological I use a qualitative text analysis.
The result shows that MEMRI´s reporting can be characterized with a clear civilization perspective a la Huntington where the western world stands affront to the Muslim world. It also shows that the role of religion is decisive with a specific way forward – Muslims must act and show their loathing toward the western world. (Less)
