The theme of this essay is female genital mutilation. The essay pose the question: Can female mutilation be justified?
The purpose is to identify the main values in the two argumentation lines for and against the phenomenon. By doing so analyse which of the values that are of highest priority and significance. Health, religion, freedom, justice, moral, culture, tradition, inherence, aesthetic, political factors, the right to your own body and sexuality are all values that are being brought into light. The method applied is an analysis of ideas but of normative theoretical key signature.
The essay also discusses the two normative ethic perspectives, deontological or consequntialism, the meaning of a value and of justification in a normative perspective. Additionally it gives a description of the phenomenon female genital mutilation and its existence.
The results of the analysis and answer to the question are, based on a normative relativistic value approach, that it is possible to justify female genital mutilation if one takes a position from which one argue that value. Which ethical perspective that is, is indifferent. (Less)
