With a social constructivist perspective have I, through participant observation, studied 15-year old girls in their everyday school environment to examine how these girls rank themselves within their gender category. This study indicates that there is a hegemonic femininity that is based on physical appearance and determined by the hegemonic masculinity. The “male gaze” becomes the hierarchical system of the girls in which they rank each other, which means that the hierarchy is externally determined by mirroring how the boys see them. (Less)
