The purpose of this study was to examine how young people in the age of 16 – 17 in Rosengård think about their future, their residential area and what they feel media and other people think about them. The respondents in this study have another cultural and ethnic background than the Swedish. In total nine people took part in this study.

How do young people in a highly stigmatized residential area feel and think about their future? What role does the residential area play in their future view? And how do they feel about Rosengård? To find the answers to these questions we made a qualitative study. The study is based on interviews with nine young people that are living in Rosengård. To be able to analyze our qualitative interviews we used three theories: Erving Goffman's theory of social stigma, Howard Becker’s labeling theory and Richard Jenkin’s theory of social identity. The results of the study show that young people in Rosengård feel stigmatized and labelled by the media and other people as criminals. The young people in Rosengård feel a togetherness and a belonging to Rosengård and its population. The study also shows that they have plans for the future and that they value education. (Less)
