Abstract
The field of labour history has come to increasingly include the study of gender, a social relation that traditionally has been made invisible. At the same time the past decades of theoretical debate within gender studies and history have meant the marginalisation of class studies, at the benefit of other social relations. I wish to contribute to the field of research on the Swedish labour union movement and to the understanding of class and gender, by studying the Swedish Municipal Workers’ Union (Kommunal), a union in which women are the majority. Drawing on Marxist and feminist theory on gender, class and the Swedish model I conduct an ideology critical close reading of Kommunal’s congress debates on women’s participation and... (More)

I wish to contribute to the field of research on the Swedish labour union movement and to the understanding of class and gender, by studying the Swedish Municipal Workers’ Union (Kommunal), a union in which women are the majority. Drawing on Marxist and feminist theory on gender, class and the Swedish model I conduct an ideology critical close reading of Kommunal’s congress debates on women’s participation and representation, gender equality as a matter of principle and working hours, in order to examine how gender politics has been constructed in the organisation 1958-2006. The main conclusions are that the conditions for gender politics in Kommunal are decided within both patriarchal and capitalist frameworks. The tension that exists in Kommunal between radical demands of redistribution and the aim for consensus between classes and between men and women place its gender politics between struggle and compromise.
