- Abstract
- The purpose of this study was to examine the way of communication and sense of community on an online extreme virtual community called pro-ana. The pro-ana community consists of like-minded people who see Anorexia Nervosa as a choice of lifestyle and not a disease. Through qualitative observations of threads of dis-cussion the communication on a Swedish pro-ana forum has been the focus of the study. The theoretical perspective used was mainly communication-theory, in-cluding computer-mediated communication, but also theories about community and the specific terminology of a group has played part in the analysis. - The purpose of this study was to examine the way of communication and sense of community on an online extreme virtual community called pro-ana. The pro-ana community consists of like-minded people who see Anorexia Nervosa as a choice of lifestyle and not a disease. Through qualitative observations of threads of dis-cussion the communication on a Swedish pro-ana forum has been the focus of the study. The theoretical perspective used was mainly communication-theory, in-cluding computer-mediated communication, but also theories about community and the specific terminology of a group has played part in the analysis. The con-clusions show that text-based communication as used on the forum can be more affectionate and relaxed than face-to-face communication. The anonymity that the Internet offers leads to that people can be their true selves without being judged by their social standards. Even though the communication is more free on the fo-rum many members request other types of communication than that one available. By interacting with people of the same view of Anorexia Nervosa they form a community or a so called in-group. The group-identity grows stronger by using terms that are unique for the community and makes it easier to see who is serious about maintaining their eating disorder and who is not. (Less)
