Abstract
The purpose of this study was to increase the understanding of the importance of work and
professional identity to young adult female students’ identity formation. The questions that
follow in this thesis were what young adult women think of the importance of their education
and expectations about their future work, the importance of the salary and finally the
possibility to combine work and family life. To accomplish the goal of this study semistructured
interviews with six young adult women, who are all at the end of their education,
were made. The interviews were analyzed by using the theory of Anthony Giddens about
modernity and reflexivity, with a focus on identity, along with the theory of Ulrich Beck
about individualization.... (More)

about individualization.
The opinion about work and professional identity’s impact on the personal identity tend to
vary and is highly individual. Clear is, however, that the respondents seem to find a great
importance in the choice of their education and they also seem to have great expectations
about their future work. They have little or no worry about the possibility to combine work
and family life. The respondents find the salary important because it says something about the
individual’s value on the labour market and the salary should correspond to the individual’s
competence, skills and education. (Less)
