This group was compared to a control condition with district nurses not taking part in any exercise. The General Health Questionnaire, the Satisfaction with Life Scale and the PANAS questionnaire were used to measure depressive symptoms, life satisfaction and positive affect respectively. The results showed significant decreases in depressive symptoms and increases in positive affect, but no changes in life satisfaction for the group taking part in the “Three Good Things Exercise”. The results for the other group were unchanged on all measures. By doing the exercise the participant is focusing on personal strengths and positive things in life instead of negative aspects, this can be one of the explanations for the increase in positive affect and decrease in depressive symptoms.
