- Abstract (Swedish)
(Less) - Abstract
- Cognitive-Behavioural-Therapy (CBT) can today offer evidence-based treatments for most psychological disorders, but has not developed systematically for people with borderline intellectual functioning (IQ 70-85) and their psychological disorders. Individuals in this unseen population are, however, exceptionally vulnerable to psychological disorders because of their social life situation, as well as their psycho-biological condition.
With the support of research concerning CBT for people with intellectual disabilities (under IQ 70), this study means to formulate and test a procedure for delivering CBT to people with borderline intellectual functioning.
The author supposes that therapists first need to assess a client’s cognitive limitations and her/his cognitive therapy abilities. An individual case formulation can then be integrated with an assessment of the client’s abilities, and simple cognitive interventions can be chosen and adjusted thereafter.
In a case study, this procedure is tested by means of an assessment manual and an adapted intervention concerning negative automatic thoughts. The result shows that the client can only make use of parts of the cognitive intervention. The author concludes that clients with borderline intellectual functioning need ample of time and repetition, concrete and experience-based techniques, as well as training transferring new knowledge to their everyday lives. In order for CBT to become available to this client group further research is needed, as well as training of therapists in adapted assessment and techniques. (Less)
