Abstract (Swedish)
(Less)
Abstract
This study aimed to investigate and evaluate change in psychological symptom levels and client satisfaction in clients treated with cognitive behavioral therapy or psychodynamic psychotherapy at a training clinic for prospective psychologists. The study also aimed to examine possible differences in outcome between clients in cognitive-behavioral therapy and psychodynamic therapy, and to examine whether there is a relationship between symptom change and satisfaction with therapy. The study has a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-treatment measurements, without random assignment or a control group. The participants consisted of 71 clients who sought services at the Lund University psychotherapy clinic during the autumn 2008 and... (More)

The study has a quasi-experimental design with pre- and post-treatment measurements, without random assignment or a control group. The participants consisted of 71 clients who sought services at the Lund University psychotherapy clinic during the autumn 2008 and spring 2009. To measure symptom levels and satisfaction with treatment, participants completed two self-report questionnaires: The Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90) and the Client Satisfaction Questionnaire (CSQ-8), respectively. Results indicate that clients who begin psychotherapy at the clinic have a degree of symptoms (in number and severity) similar to other patient groups in general. The study findings also suggest that clients receiving psychotherapy at the clinic improve both statistically and clinically. The general level of psychological symptom severity (Global Severity Index) decreased significantly from pre- to post-test (Mpre = 1.22, Mpost = 0.76, p < .01), the effect size was large (d = 0.82), and 61 % of the participants showed reliable improvement. There were no significant differences between those who received cognitive-behavioral therapy and those who received psychodynamic therapy with respect to change in symptom levels. In general, clients were very satisfied with their therapy. There was a significant association, albeit weak (r = 0.25), between symptom relief and client satisfaction. (Less)
