Specifications of an Embodiment Design and Detail Design Support Tool

Abstract
The last part of the product design process is called embodiment design, it
aims to give a “physical body” to the product so as to make it ready to use. It
is on that particular part of the design activity that I was working, I was
included in the research for the embodiment design team of the machine
design division in LTH. The main research work was upon the process of this
phase, to try to understand the way of thinking of a designer during that action.
The goal is to make the work easier (more effective and with less mistakes) in
the embodiment design part and to learn more about this activity in 2 different
ways:

The last part of the product design process is called embodiment design, it
aims to give a “physical body” to the product so as to make it ready to use. It
is on that particular part of the design activity that I was working, I was
included in the research for the embodiment design team of the machine
design division in LTH. The main research work was upon the process of this
phase, to try to understand the way of thinking of a designer during that action.
The goal is to make the work easier (more effective and with less mistakes) in
the embodiment design part and to learn more about this activity in 2 different
ways:
- To extract a general method to explain step by step how a designer will
achieve his final design.
- To develop a new design tool, which is a new type of CAD software
(especially created for the embodiment design part) with totally
different way of using.
I was responsible of the second part, to see how it is possible to create a new
kind of software with a revolutionary way of using. Indeed, what we have in
mind is to replace the mouse by an electronic pen during the drawing phase, so
that the designer can draw his sketches in the same conditions than with paper.
The modeling part is one of the weak point of every CAD softwares, since it is
never as instinctive as the hand made sketch, so that is why we want to change
that part to make it easier, faster and more natural.
We also want to make the interface friendlier for the user (by using some
useful functions and giving help to the designer). The goal is to create kind of
“intelligent software” that could help the designer by doing automatically the
easy or redundant tasks, to achieve all the mechanical calculations (at the
sharp level for some and more approximately for other).
So in this thesis you will find 3 important parts about the development of this
software:
- The establishment of the functions of the embodiment design software,
to know which functions are the most important for the embodiment
design activity and how they will be used.
- The establishment of the interface of the software, to know how the
designer will draw on the tactile screen and with which material it is
possible.
- The feasibility of the implementation of the mechanic solutions and
principles, so as to know what needs to be in the software and how is
should be used and implemented. (Less)
