- Abstract
- The Roma people have been living in Europe for about a thousand years. But still they have not been integrated in to the European society. In many places around Europe they are being subjected to unfair and sometimes illegal actions due to their ethnicity. Sweden is one of those countries. In this essay I test Will Kymlickas theory about multicultural citizenship and integration by analyzing Sweden’s integration of the Roma to answer the question why the integration of the Roma has failed. To do this I have done a theory testing case study. The aim of the study has been to show that although Sweden’s integration work and policies, to a great extent, are consistent with multicultural theory, the integration of the Roma in Sweden still haven´t succeeded.
In this essay I present two, of many, possible reasons to why multicultural policies have failed to integrate the Roma. These are racism and prejudices and also the multicultural assumption that you can integrate groups as a whole without considering the individual. (Less)
