I choose to analyze the two biggest daily newspapers in Switzerland, Tages Anzeiger and Neue Zürcher Zeitung. Previous science has focused on economical causes but I want to see if national identity has an impact on the political resistance that Switzerland holds against international organizations. With help of critical discourse analyzes and theories of nationalism I want to explore if a discourse of national identity can be found in the media. In my material I found that there is a national identity in the media and that it has changed over time. In the articles I located that the discourse is stronger used in the year 2001, I found an occurrence of “we” and them” and that “we” as a nation are threatened by a EU membership. (Less)
