- Abstract
- This study aims to explore media representations of political processes in countries that are situated in the geo-political periphery. More specifically, this study examines through a discourse analytical edge articles published by Dagens Nyheter (Sweden), New York Times (US) and Clarín (Argentina), about the political upheavals that threatened the democratic system in Ecuador 2010, Honduras 2009 and Bolivia 2008.
The empirical material confirms earlier scholarship illuminating the link between media, representation and power regarding the relationship between the West and “the rest”. The comparison of the Swedish and US located media with the Argentinean one reveals larger differences in how the events studied had been represented.... Meanwhile criticism against the presidents is a central part of the representation of the problem in the media located in Europe and the US, this representation in the Argentinian media is not as prominent.
