Abstract
How does the identity discourse appear when a country is negotiating for an EU membership? Is it positive or negative towards taking part of the European identity? This essay is a critical discourse analysis inspired by Fairclough, where I analyze the Croatian identity discourse during 2005-2010 in three Croatian newspapers. The purpose of my essay is to analyze what the identity-discussion has been about and see how it has been shaped. Through my analysis of my Croatian material will I also use my concept of Europeanization and examine if it is included in the discussion. My conclusions is that my three units of analysis shows a fragmentation in the Croatian discourse, in which the three units of analysis are taking on Europeanization and identity in different ways, but they also show of a process of the different stages of this Europeanization.
