Abstract
Since 2008, a picture is emerging of a global rush of the world’s farmland, referred to as land acquisition. Several factors underpin these land acquisitions such as the financial crisis and the food prices hikes of 2007/8. Another key driver behind the deals is the biofuel boom that has been a major cosmopolitical topic the last few years. Land acquisition refers to when a wealthier nation, firm or private investor buys or leases land in a ‘host’ nation, usually characterized as a developing country. These contracts lack transparency for the public domain and there is dearth information about ongoing negotiations. Land is a scarce resource in developing countries and the debate covering land acquisitions is heavily polarized and that is... (More)
Since 2008, a picture is emerging of a global rush of the world’s farmland, referred to as land acquisition. Land is a scarce resource in developing countries and the debate covering land acquisitions is heavily polarized and that is why it is important to reveal.
By examining land acquisition through a neoliberal, neorealist and a neomarxist perspective, the purpose of this thesis is to illuminate the main emphasis about land acquisition and its effects. Three different ideal types will be constructed where I have joint together the central point of view of every perspective. Further the ideal types will be taken into consideration while doing the analysis.
The analysis shows that there are similarities and disparities between the perspectives attitudes towards land acquisition. Through a neomarxist perspective the main assumption is that the external actors are exploiting the host countries. The neoliberal refers to the rhetoric about a win-win situation, while the neorealist covers the subject by talking about a diverse security dilemma. (Less)
