Abstract
Our main purpose with this study is to examine and elucidate the recovery process that occurs when women choose to break up from destructive relationships. Our aim is also to clarify what, by the women themselves, is considered to be efficient help in relation to what in fact is offered in actuality. The idea of this selection was that we, in the study of the recovery process, would make a compiling comparison of the interventions offered to so see if they stand in correlation with women's wishes. In order to achieve this aimed objective and produce adequate information, our sample therefore consists of a combination of both therapists and women's statements. Our main purpose with this study is to examine and elucidate the recovery process that occurs when women choose to break up from destructive relationships. The idea of this selection was that we, in the study of the recovery process, would make a compiling comparison of the interventions offered to so see if they stand in correlation with women's wishes. In order to achieve this aimed objective and produce adequate information, our sample therefore consists of a combination of both therapists and women's statements. To meet our studied purpose, we considered that the qualitative method was the most suitable approach for a richer content and more contextual understanding of the chosen field. Because of the complexity of violence against women and how it is expressed, the qualitative method enabled us to obtain a deeper and more thorough understanding. We started from semi-structured interviews, based on the statements of five therapists and three women, that allowed us to get answers to the questions we had most interest in, while also creating an open dialogue between us and the interviewees. As a conclusion, we found that the overall objective, which was advocated by all the professionals, was to help women regain their self-esteem and independence. Issues such as time, support, patience, and economics go hand in hand in the efforts to help these vulnerable women. Most therapists were positive about the interventions that were offered but also pointed to the aspects mentioned above as contributing factors to the recovery process development. The therapists also felt, as well as the interviewed women, that a bad attitude, poor interagency cooperation and the constant threat and fear from the man were inhibiting factors in the recovery work.
