Abstract
Prodatec is a Mexican company manufacturing office furniture and closets. As the competiveness increases there are higher demands on better quality. The company wishes to compete by heading towards a Lean Manufacturing system. The first step is to implement 5S as a natural corner stone in the production. Prodatec is a Mexican company manufacturing office furniture and closets. As the competiveness increases there are higher demands on better quality. The company wishes to compete by heading towards a Lean Manufacturing system. The first step is to implement 5S as a natural corner stone in the production. Implement 5S as a mean to achieve better order and to take a step towards Lean Production. • Document and improve the procedures in the factory and create a
foundation for a documented quality system. By interviews, conversations and observations the 5S were implemented and the
manufacturing processes in the factory mapped. Internal documents describing the procedures in the factory were developed. Every procedure has been described and revised in detail. Due to lack of space they are though not included in the thesis. One of the main impacts the documentation contributed with was to establish a standardized format for revising the first manufactured piece, primera pieza. This was made as an attempt to minimize the amount of non‐conforming products. The procedures for non‐conforming products have as well been mapped. The documentation procedure made the people involved analyze their working situation and think of improvements. Many also started to question what and how they really were
doing their operations. The 5S were realized in the offices and in some parts of the factory. A formulary for revising the standard was conducted and an education was held for the employees in the offices. The implementation has though just begun and the future crucial success factors for the rest of the factory will be education, top .
management involvement and to sustain discipline
Some improvements achieved were the following: The order and cleanness were reformed. A system for non‐conforming products was constructed. A foundation of documents for controlling the quality of incoming goods was conducted. The awareness and the responsibility for quality se
were improved. The differences between the two shift dcreased. The key to future success in the area of quality lies in basing improvement of quality on facts. The information collected in the new formularies is going to be seful. It is also important to give the employees a bigger responsibility.
