Abstract
The company Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings in Sege, have certificates for environment and quality management systems according to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. During spring 2003 they launched a new product, Tinova VX, which became a success. By studying the product development process, knowledge about the systems and the usage of them could be gained.
The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse the strong and weak sides of the management systems and thus investigate what kind of possibilities there is to improve. The company Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings in Sege, have certificates for environment and quality management systems according to ISO 14001 and ISO 9001. During spring 2003 they launched a new product, Tinova VX, which became a success. By studying the product development process, knowledge about the systems and the usage of them could be gained.
The main purpose of this thesis is to analyse the strong and weak sides of the management systems and thus investigate what kind of possibilities there is to improve. The second purpose is to examine the surplus of integrating management systems and the conditions to integrate the environment and quality management systems, either at Akzo Nobel Decorative Coatings solely or jointly with Akzo Nobel Industrial Coatings.
The results show that parts of the management systems were used with good results during the product development process of Tinova VX. For example the product was tested large-scale, the developed product was innovative and environmentally friendly and the reclamations have been well documented.
On the contrary there were parts that went less well, either because people did not follow routines or because the lack of routines. One weakness in the systems is that there are too little about the product development process. When working out those routines it is important that the company make the most of the experiences from the Tinova VX project.
Another weakness is the support for the management systems. The awareness and engagement for the systems should be raised supposedly by education.
It seems like the company have a lot to gain by integrating their management systems. An integrated system is user-friendlier and the company does not need double documents. The conditions for integrating the management systems within the company are good. Integrating the systems jointly with ANIC are more complicated but at the same time more knowledge could be gained.
