- Drama at work - How social workers cope with compulsory care cases due to neglect
The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers cope with compulsory care cases due to neglect. This essay aims to highlight the difficult, and often emotionally hard, process of making a legitimate decision. I´ve chose power as my main perspective in order to examine my purpose. The purpose of this study was to examine how social workers cope with compulsory care cases due to neglect. This essay aims to highlight the difficult, and often emotionally hard, process of making a legitimate decision. I´ve chose power as my main perspective in order to examine my purpose. My methodology was qualitative, semi-structured interviews due to my interest in social workers subjective experiences, and my belief in the power of first-hand stories. I used four respondents, all with at least 10 years of experience in social work. I´ve found that social workers are influenced by many different factors, not all of them connected to the neglect itself. Good and open communication between the social worker and the parents is one of the main keys in preventing the threatening compulsory care cases. Though sometime volatile situations results in threats which can cause severe, but un-founded stress. The colleagues of the social worker fill a containing function, and contribute with support and perspective. Although having a position of power, social workers tend to feel powerless when it comes to compulsory care cases. The findings also showed that it can be problematic for social workers and parents to collaborate in an effective manner when a compulsive care decision has been made. (Less)
