Acceptance test of a linear accelerator
(1998)Medical Physics Programme
- Abstract (Swedish)
- When a new linear accelerator is installed at a department it is of great importance that it is carefully controlled and calibrated before being put into clinical use. This is done with the acceptance test (AT). The mechanical parameters, the beam performance and the reproducibility of the dose output are tested. For each test there is a requirement which must be fulfilled for the machine to pass the test. The requirements should be according to national and international recommendations. In this thesis an AT of a Varian linear accelerator, Clinac 2100 C/D, was performed at the Haukeland hospital in Bergen, Norway. A major part of the thesis was to put together a new version of the local acceptance test protocol, taken from two old versions... (More)

A major part of the thesis was to put together a new version of the local acceptance test protocol, taken from two old versions used in previous AT’s at the department. Requirements for all the test were also found in national or international recommendations. After the performance of the AT, an evaluation of the result, the test procedures and the relevance of some of the tests in the local AT was made. Some suggestions for improvement were made where the major subject is the great number of tests and the time spent on performing them. Some of the test results did not pass the requirements in the local AT but the accelerator was still accepted in September 1999. (Less)
