Krig och demokrati

- Abstract
- That democracy brings peace has been long known. That war may, in certain cases, bring democracy has not. However, the essay begins by exploring the history of humanitarian and liberal interventions, as well as the history of ideas behind them. I have found that the first cases appeared in the 19th-century, though they were rare until the second half of the 20th. I have also discussed legal and ethical issues pertaining to the matter, as well as briefly looked into the role of media in promoting interventions. I have also presented alternative explanations other than interventions as to why countries democratize. The variables for which I have found material have been used in a multiple regression analysis, with cases ranging from 1990 to... (More)

I have also presented alternative explanations other than interventions as to why countries democratize. The variables for which I have found material have been used in a multiple regression analysis, with cases ranging from 1990 to 2000. My data seems to suggest that interventions, and in particular liberal ones, have a positive effect on democratization. Finally, my essay suggests that further studies on the subject are needed to fully explain the mechanisms governing the transition to democracy after an intervention. (Less)

- id
