- Abstract
- This thesis examines the connection between previous experience of democracy and the inclination to democratic consolidation. Huntington predicted in 1991 in his famous book The Third Wave that countries which became democratic during the so called Third Wave of democratization would be more inclined to democratic consolidation if they had a historical experience of democracy. Other scientists have claimed that such connection does not exist and that previous experience of democracy is rather a sign of democratic instability. The hypothesis that a democratic past has a significant effect on democratic consolidation is examined with a quantitative method with the countries of the Third Wave as units of analysis. Democratic consolidation is operationalized in two different ways in accordance with Andreas Schedler’s research on the concept of democratic consolidation, i.e. a negative and a positive understanding of the concept. The negative perspective is focused on avoiding democratic break down while the positive understanding deals with the deepening of democracy. The data is analyzed in two separate logistic regressions and shows an ambiguous result. If democratic consolidation is understood from a negative perspective there is a significant connection between a democratic history and chances for consolidation. However, the positive understanding shows no such correlation. (Less)
