Our purpose with this paper was to try to get a better understanding of how a social worker acts and thinks in their assessments. Our purpose with this paper was to try to get a better understanding of how a social worker acts and thinks in their assessments. Especially in the interaction between a foster child and the biological parents along with what role the child has in the process. We were also curious about what qualities a good foster family should have. Finally, we wanted to know which was best for the child, a placement within the network or in a foster home. Through qualitative interviews with six social workers, and previous research, we tried to clarify those issues. The result of our paper is that the child has a major role in all assessments that affects them. The social worker must listen to the child and then take this into account in its assessment in relation to their age and maturity. How social worker judge is always based on the child’s needs. We have also been presented that it is a delicate task that requires a lot of the foster home. It takes a lot of knowledge and there are many demands on what a good foster home should be. It is after all about helping a vulnerable child to a better life. In terms of where a child should be placed the social worker must investigate the family for a possible placement there before considering a foster home. But basically, the childrens best interest is always the most important.
