Title: Life according to Lyxfällan – norm making of consumer behavior in the TV-program Lyxfällan [translated title]

This Thesis enlightens today’s consumer society with starting-point at the Swedish TV-program Lyxfällan, which in English means Luxury trap. The TV-program is a lifestyle type of program with two economic advisors trying to help people with financial problem. The focus in the TV-program is consumption that can be related to social problems such as debts or other economic problems. The aim with this Thesis is to analyse the norms within consumer behavior inside the TV-program Lyxfällan and to investigate how these norms appear in Lyxfällan and on the Swedish forum Familjeliv. The method used to analyse the raw material in this Thesis is discourse analysis. Discourse analysis focus on the meaning of the language in our understanding of reality, and makes it possible to analyse hidden context. The theoretical aspects used in this Thesis are social constructivism, consumer culture theory and discourse analysis with a base within discursive struggle and large discourses such as the discourse about children. The analysis within this Thesis focuses on the lifestyle Lyxfällan communicating as the desirable, and how well this lifestyle is rooted in society. The purpose is to analyse the norms that is visible in Lyxfällan, and how these norms are discussed in Lyxfällan and on the forum Familjeliv. The result is that the norms Lyxfällan enunciate are the same norms that Familjeliv enunciate. In Lyxfällan consumption and consumer behavior are discussed in the same way as in Familjeliv. A conclusion from this analysis is that Lyxfällan do not challenge the view on today’s consumer society, it rather plays on the dominating norms in our society. This Thesis indicate that Lyxfällan reinforce already established norms around consumer behavior. (Less)
