Abstract
Surrogate motherhood is a relatively new phenomenon. In the early 1990´s it became
permissible to transplant an embryo into another women’s uterus. This led to the possibility
for women in India, to carry the foetal and give birth to an entire genetic child for childless
couples in the Western world. Wealthy homosexual and heterosexual couples use this method
to find a way out of their infertility difficulties. The price for the surrogate motherhood in

to find a way out of their infertility difficulties. The price for the surrogate motherhood in
India is comparable to one third of the price in the U.S. The aim of this thesis has been to
discuss the phenomenon of surrogate mothers in India through the eyes of Swedish up to date
media, using a critical discourse analysis with a social constructivist approach as well as the
post colonial feminist theory. The aim was to illustrate the arguments for and against
surrogate motherhood, illustrate the discourse of Indian women being surrogate mothers in the
Swedish media debate and the social impact of these women. After having analysed the data
three categories emerged: ethical aspects, opinions for and opinions against surrogate
motherhood in India. I came to the conclusion that the ethical positioning assumes that the
relation between the surrogate mother and the couple is unequal. The proponents justify using
a surrogate mother because of the payment they are given. The opponents of surrogate
motherhood share the belief that the Indian surrogate mothers and their uterus are purely used
for selfish purpose of wealthy childless couples. (Less)
