- Abstract
- Elderly care in Sweden is facing many challenges. In recent years it has been observed to be insufficient as many elderly rights have been encroached upon. One factor which has been determined to be important to meet all of the new demands is an effective and successful leadership. One factor which has been determined to be important to meet all of the new demands is an effective and successful leadership. The intention of this study was to examine how middle managers in Swedish elderly care reflect and describe their mission and their professional role, how they relate to the demands of their professional role and if there are any differences in terms of background and previous education.
For the purpose of this study eight middle managers that work at nursing homes have been interviewed. Governmentality has been applied as the underlining foundation for the understanding of how views on leadership and different types of control technologies are perceived.
It was determined that the managers interviewed found themselves under different types of scrutiny and control, both internal and external. As a middle manager they found their personal discretion limited in relation to their superiors. One method for meeting the demands placed on them was to use various management techniques, including among others: make themselves visible within the workplace, use coaching based leadership or delegating responsibility, They were also using indirect control and steering techniques to promote the employees which works towards the normal directives. Background and previous education was also mentioned as different factors on how they perceived their professional role. (Less)
