Skolverket points out that a lot of counties do not have the functional routines that are necessary to guard students who have compulsory attendance at school. Our three main questions in this thesis are how the schools view their own responsibility, how they view the guardians and the student’s responsibility. How the schools and its personnel define valid and invalid absence and which strategies the schools have to handle students with absenteeism. To get answers to our questions we used qualitative semi structured interviews. We have interviewed one principal, one counselor and one teacher at two schools in Malmö stad. We choose to analyze our results by using American sociologist Aron Antonovsky´s theory on health and illness called salutogenesis. Our results show that the schools, in their work with students who are absent, focus on what is functional for the students and try to emphasize this by motivation and participation in the school environment. The schools base all their strategies on what is best for the individual student just like Antonovsky´s theory who emphasizes that the main focus on a person’s health should be on what it is that makes the person healthy instead on what it is that makes the person unhealthy.
