- Abstract
- In Sweden, there are few alternatives to hospital birth. Midwifery led birth centres are more common abroad. The aim of this study was to investigate midwives views and experiences of working at birth centres in England. Interviews with nine midwives working at three birth centres were performed. The results showed that midwives value their sense of freedom and autonomy of practice. Experiencing natural births by practicing normal midwifery care is seen as very encouraging and many expressed professional development and increased confidence by working in a birth centre. The different localization of the birth centres had both advantages and disadvantages.
