The literature shows that lack of good hygiene is an important issue on which to focus as hygiene deficiency can lead to healthcare associated infections (HAI). The aim of this study was to explore the health care workers basic hygienic routines and their compliance with local guidelines in Uganda and to Swedish national hygienic guidelines. The study was conducted as an observational study. The inclusion criterion for sample selection was professionals such as nurses or doctors. About 100 observations were made and 52 persons were observed. The result showed that the health care workers to some extent are following their own guidelines. Gloves were used by 79,2 % of the health care workers. Hand wash was observed in 2 out of 101 observations. The result showed low compliance compared to the Swedish guidelines. None of the health care workers used hand disinfection. The observation result of hair and nails showed high compliance to the guidelines used in both Mbarara and Sweden. The overall conclusion of this study is the importance of continued quality improvement and the need of increased resources at the hospital in Mbarara. (Less)
